2016 Awards and Show
AWARDS FOR MAKERS BY MAKERS
Creating and making are often very personal experiences for makers. The nature of their work is often solitary. While the work itself is rewarding, it can be very easy for them to feel like "Does this matter to anyone? Is this even good? Am I getting better?"
Without a meaningful process for recognition, it can be hard to truly honor makers. And a true honor, for us, was one that wasn't about how good you are about soliciting your friends and followers to vote for you, but it's about true admiration from your peers.Which is why we created an awards system that is peer-based nominations and voting-- not a contest to see who has the biggest network that will vote for them.
When makers, and those in the maker community, honor other makers you create a process that truly celebrates them-- where it's about giving people a high five instead of getting more likes.
It's been two years of doing AHAS awards shows and every time I get emails that say:
"I can't believe someone thought so highly of me!"
"I really needed this today. Things have been really hard lately and I've been feeling burned out. This gave me a boost."
I always tell them, it's not me-- it's the awesome person who nominated you. They get all the karma points.
"Even though I'm not within the physical region of the Academy of Handmade (I'm in MI) winning the award and being part of the community digitally has been inspiring, uplifting, and so educational!"

AWARD CATEGORIES AND GROUPS
Our awards process is based on the medium makers work in (this is a change from the previous years).
All nominated artists will be selected to be in one of 12 different categories that are based on the handmade medium the artist is most known for working in (the except is the Handmade Supporter which is given to businesses who are helping makers). Once nominations close, Academy members will vote for the best of each medium.
Our members also vote on awards for and select a Handmade Community Superstar presented by Aftcra. The Academy leadership also selects a Master Maker presented by Creativelive (read about previous Master Makers Jenny Hart and Erin Dollar) who we select based on doing awesome work and kicking ass at business!
Want to celebrate makers and connect with creatives? We are actively seeking sponsors for the 2016 awards show, including in-kind and monetary sponsors. If you are interested in sponsoring, please email firstname.lastname@example.org.
