2015 Awards and Show
Awards for Makers by Makers
Our goal through our awards process is to shine a light on the amazing work that is being created by professional makers. It was important for us to have a process that was based on not only people who made great stuff, but also people who were killing it at their business. The people who understand this best are other makers and the businesses that work directly with them. A true honor, for us, was one that wasn't about how good you are about soliciting your friends and followers to vote for you, but it's about true admiration from your peers. That's why it's very important to us to have our Best Artist, Handmade Community Superstar and Best Supporter Business awards to be voted on by our members, who have gone through an application process showing that they are indeed part of the maker community. That said, we are a new community and we know the handmade world is vast! That's why we encourage others involved in handmade work to let us know who we should be voting on by nominating makers and supporter businesses.

SHOW: MARCH 7, 2015
We're throwing a party! We would love for you to join us. The awards show is all about celebrating the great people and products in the handmade community. While we announce and present our awards that evening, it is also an acknowledgement of all the great work being done by professional makers. There will be food, drinks and friends!
Our 2014 inaugural awards show was a success! You can read more about it hear on the blog.
Award Categories and Groups
Our awards process is based on two very different ways of looking at makers: one is by product and the other is by the medium they work in. Because product categories are almost infinite and medium categories are much more specific, we use product categories to showcase the vast array of the kinds of products made by makers and the medium categories to showcase how makers can take materials and create beautiful objects. The nominations process is based on product categories and the best artist awards are based on medium.
Awards, for the most part, will be given out for two separate groups: Best Artists and Achievement Honorees. All nominated artists will be selected to be in one of 12 different categories that are based on the handmade medium the artist is most known for working in. Once nominations close, Academy members will vote for the best of each medium.
Now, we do want to give special recognition to those who also received the most nominations that are based on product category. While we see transforming materials to be the highest honor, getting nominated the most times for a particular product category is also cause for celebration. Once nominations close, we also tally up the nominations and give the most in each category the distinction of Achievement Honoree (this also includes support businesses!).
Our members also vote on awards for the Best Support Business (which our members vote from all of the Business Achievement Honorees) and select a Handmade Community Superstar. The Academy leadership also selects a Master Maker (read about last year's MM Jenny Hart! We will be announcing our 2015 Master Maker soon) who we select based on doing awesome work and kicking ass at business! This year we will also be doing a special award localized to our San Francisco chapter.
Want to celebrate makers and connect with creatives? We are actively seeking sponsors for the 2015 awards show, including in-kind and monetary sponsors. If you are interested in sponsoring, please visit our Awards Sponsorship page.
